Video: L&G unveils first factory made home

Legal & General (L&G) has unveiled its first turnkey modular housing prototype, a two-storey, two-bedroom home.
L&G said it expected to deliver its first homes in the first half of next year. Its offsite factory in Selby, near Leeds, is building the capacity to produce thousands of homes a year across eight production lines, employing several hundred local people.
It has ambitious plans to speed up housebuilding with its modular, precision-engineered homes, which will arrive on site with doors, windows, curtains and carpets already fitted. It is hoped the factory will produce 3,000 homes a year when operating at full capacity.

The insurer is already involved in house building through its Cala Homes offshoot and build-to-rent division. The new model is made with cross-laminated timber and is not open to the public, only being a prototype, not a show home.
Rosie Toogood, chief executive of L&G Modular, said: “The unveiling of our first prototype today marks an exciting and important step in our programme to bring modular homes constructed from CLT to market.
“This prototype demonstrates the high quality of our modular solutions, debunking preconceptions of modular housing. At full production, homes like this will be delivered repeatedly in a matter of weeks without the snagging issues faced by traditional methods.”
She added: “L&G has a long heritage in providing housing in the UK and sees modular construction as a natural evolution and extension of its position in this market. Modular construction is set to revolutionise the housebuilding sector bringing new materials along with methods and processes used in industries, such as car-making to raise productivity and help to address the UK’s chronic shortfall of new homes.”
L&G recently showcased a 26 sq m modular home that was set to be the first put into commercial production. The LaunchPod was designed for Richmond Housing Partnership (RHP) by former Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners staffers William Wimshurst and Leonardo Pelleriti’s Wimshurst Pelleriti practice.
