Big Carl, the world's largest crane, has lifted into place the 245-tonne dome of Hinkley Point C's second reactor building.

The 14m-tall dome closes the 44m-high reactor building.

Work on Unit 2 was stopped during the pandemic. Although the second dome was lifted 18 months after the first, Unit 2 is further ahead thanks to offsite manufacturing and lessons learnt from the construction of the first unit.

Hinkley Point C is a two-unit, 3,200MWe EPR nuclear power station in Somerset. It is being built by the Bouygues and Laing O’Rourke joint venture (Bylor JV) for client EDF Energy.
