UK contractors sound climate alarm

A total of 32 individual contractors and industry bodies have now signed up to an initiative that urges construction to combat the twin crises of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss.
BAM, Canary Wharf Contractors, Morgan Sindall, Multiplex, Sir
Robert McAlpine, Skanska and Willmott Dixon are all founding signatories to the
‘Contractors Declare’ movement.
They have since been joined by other organisations including Build UK, Caledonian Modular, ISG, John Sisk & Son, and McLaughlin & Harvey.

Recognising that buildings and construction account for
nearly 40% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions, the ‘Contractors Declare’
initiatives commits signatories, together with their clients’ to commission and
design buildings, cities and infrastructure as “indivisible components of a
larger, constantly regenerating and self-sustaining system”.
It seeks to raise awareness of the climate crisis and the
need for action among employees, clients and supply chains, as well as advocating
for faster change in the industry towards regenerative practices and higher
government investment.
And the group is working to establish climate mitigation and adaptation principles, as well as maximising biodiversity and air quality enhancement. It wants to see signatories and their supply chains set targets for their own emissions and the assets they design and build, using recognised standards aligned to the “1.5 degree scenario”, which aims to limit global warming to no more than 1.5C.
