Skanska tests drones controlled from 50 miles away

Skanska and sees.ai test the new advanced drone system at Mindenhurst, Surrey

Skanska has begun tests of an automated drone controlled by a pilot based in a control room 50 miles away, in what it claimed was one of the first trials of its kind in the UK.

The drone is being tested on site at a Skanska development in Mindenhurst, Surrey for client the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), and the technology is also to be trialled on the HS2 London tunnels main works contract through the Skanska Costain Strabag joint venture.

During the flight at Mindenhurst, the drone captured video and imagery of structural details. The aim of the test was to prove the value of Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) technology.
