In pictures | Bridge lifted into place at Forge Island

A new pedestrian bridge has been lifted into place at Forge Island, Rotherham, linking the development in South Yorkshire with the town centre.

The 46m-long bridge, weighing 86 tonnes, was manufactured and installed by S H Structures, a specialist in the design and manufacture of complex steel structures.

A crane was erected and rigged over two days to prepare for the installation of the bridge. The operation took one hour “in a military precision operation”, said placemaker Muse.

FaulknerBrowne Architects based the structure’s design on the Bailey bridge, a type of portable, steel-truss bridge designed and developed by Rotherham-born civil engineer, Donald Bailey.

The Bailey bridge was used by the military throughout Europe during the Second World War.

The Forge Island development, part of Rotherham Council’s regeneration plans of the town centre, is being delivered in partnership with the Council, Muse and Bowman & Kirkland.
