Fewer than 100,000 new homes have been registered built in the first three quarters of the year, falling well below the government’s target of building 200,000 this year. According to NHBC figures 93,870 new home registrations have been made- under half of what is needed, and with only one more quarter of the year to account for.
For the quarter July-September 2011, new UK homes registrations stood at 30,038, just over 400 more than the same period last year, but statistically 20,000 less than needs to be built if the government’s housing targets are to be met.
NHBC Chief Executive Imtiaz Farookhi said ‘Viewing the figures in absolute terms underlines the real scale of the challenge facing the whole house building industry.’ Farookhi stated that if the government’s reported figure of 230,000 homes was to be met, was going to require real concerted efforts.
‘The government needs to not only remain strong on policy already announced but must also be prepared for further assertive action if it becomes clear that house building volumes in the UK continue to remain at perilously low levels,’ he said.
