The new Board, which has been formed following a review of the Policy Board, is an opportunity to shape CIOB’s positioning on several key areas including quality, skills and sustainability.
The External Affairs Advisory Board provides strategic direction on policy and public affairs matters as well as input on and support for delivery. Its broad purpose is to provide a body of expertise to assist CIOB in development of its global external policy.

The CIOB is seeking expressions of interest, with a view to having new Board members take up the role from December 2021. As CIOB is a worldwide organisation, applications from members across the globe are welcome. Applications from members with a key interest or specialism in the following areas are desirable:
- Building Regulations
- Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
- Education and Skills
- Planning and Housing
- Procurement
- Sustainability and Carbon Reduction
The Board will consist of members from different backgrounds and fields of work. An interest in policy, public affairs, campaigning and parliamentary engagement on issues around improving the built environment is also desired.
The External Affairs Advisory Board is one of CIOB’s three key operational boards. The main tasks for this Board are:
- To debate and recommend strategic global policy and public affairs direction within the overall strategic framework of CIOB.
- To provide a body of expertise to assist the Institute in the development of its global external policy.
- To identify and develop strategic relationships with relevant stakeholders and explore areas where policy and public affairs engagement can be utilised.
- To contribute to relevant policy and public affairs activity through consultations, events, meetings, and research.
Ian Brant FCIOB, director at Brant Construction Quantum Experts and co-chair of the External Affairs Advisory Board, said: “The new External Affairs Advisory Board is a core part of CIOB’s strategic plan, ensuring there is a body of expertise to assist CIOB in the development of its global positioning.
“We welcome applications from members across the built environment, and from across the globe, to help shape our response on the major issues affecting the built environment now and, in the future, particularly as we emerge from the effects of the pandemic.
“Members of the Board will also have the opportunity to demonstrate leadership, helping communicate the importance of the built environment amongst policy makers and other stakeholders.”
The tenure for Board members is three years and there will be four meetings a year (both virtually and face-to-face). Members of the Board will also be invited to CIOB-led parliamentary events and roundtable policy discussions.
