CIOB Minecraft competition finalists revealed

The CIOB has announced the five finalists in its Minecraft competition, which was launched to mark International Construction Management Day on 9 March. The virtual 3D world-building game has 30 million users worldwide.
Participants were challenged to design either the Shard in London; Beijing’s CCTV headquarters; the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur; Sydney Opera House; or the UK’s Houses of Parliament.
There were 77 entrants, a mixture of construction professionals, students and Minecraft enthusiasts. The five finalists are:

Videos of all five final builds can be seen online here where readers can also vote for their favourite to take the overall prize. The public vote will close on 8 May, with the overall victor, who will be announced on 11 May, winning an iPad Mini 16GB.
One of the finalists is the son of built environment social media expert Su Butcher.
Saul Townsend, head of communications at the CIOB, said: “This competition created a palpable sense of fear within the BIM community challenged to take on Minecrafters in their own back yard. What has amazed us is the level of detail that participants managed to achieve in replicating these projects.
“If construction wants to attract the next generation of professionals it has only to look at Minecraft and the millions of users showcasing their passion and talent for building structures. Our competition may have well unearthed a future Construction Manager of the Year winner.”
International Construction Management Day began in 2010 as a partnership between the CIOB the International Project Management Association (IPMA) and the Construction Management Associations of America (CMAA), Japan (CMAJ), and Korea (CMAK), to celebrate the role construction management plays in securing healthy, fulfilled populations.
The CIOB celebrated last year’s ICM day with a competition to spell out the letters CIOB in an interesting and imaginative way, which was won by a stop motion animation depicting tiny Lego construction workers building the letters CIOB from various materials.
