New software that will allow complex 3D models to be displayed in real-time on any piece of hardware was launched at Digital Construction Week.
Umbra – a leader in automated 3D optimisation technology for designers and engineers – said that its Composit software intelligently developed for gaming optimises complex models that, until now, could not be loaded on mobile mixed-reality devices.
It would, said Umbra’s CEO Otso Mäkinen, provide a step forward for AR as designers and construction teams will be able to overlay these complex images on real landscapes on tablets and smart phones.

Mäkinen said: “It makes it possible to share models on phones and tablets. As well as the visual imagery, all the meta data as well can be shared simply on a mobile device.”
Composit works alongside popular authoring tools such as Autodesk Revit. Once installed, it makes it possible for users to “Umbrafy” – automatically optimise complex 3D models with a single click – projects from their Revit 3D View instantly.
This “Umbrafied” content is then pushed to Umbra’s powerful cloud, where it can be shared to virtually any internet-connected device with a web browser and a growing number of VR and AR platforms, including Microsoft HoloLens, Apple ARKit, and Samsung Gear VR.
This makes it possible for large, geographically dispersed teams of varying technical expertise to review renderings in real time, greatly accelerating the design review process.
