RICS is in the vanguard of standardising BIM expertise. The institute has developed a BIM Manager Certification in response to industry need for a universal standard on which to assess the skills of construction professionals in using BIM.
Launched in 2013 the Certification seeks to put an end to different assessment methods by offering BIM competent professionals a single indicator that will demonstrate their abilities to the sector.
The institute has reported considerable interest in its scheme since its launch with a number of applications. There are now 17 qualified RICS Certified BIM Managers. These professionals hold a variety of job titles from across the built environment and from a broad range of companies. There are QSs, project managers, academics, architects and many heads of BIM from employers that include Mace, Faithful & Gould, County Councils and Universities.

To achieve the certification applicants are assessed by a group of experts from across the industry. They must provide a 2,000 word BIM case study detailing their personal involvement, capability, knowledge and understanding as well as a critical reflection of the project. In addition, they must demonstrate their BIM skills across three core competencies, including BIM initiation, processes and collaboration and integration as well as in at least one of two optional competencies covering commercial and technical abilities. A detailed five year employment history will also be required.

The 2014 RICS BIM conference sold out and RICS is launching its first BIM conference abroad in 2015 in Singapore.
Introduction to BIM Implementation and Management
The Introduction to BIM Implementation and Management is the first module of a five-module training programme.
This training provides construction professionals with the fundamental knowledge and understanding of the principles, terminologies, tools and techniques including issues about technology, process and people you would need for the successful adoption of BIM on construction projects.
This one-day module on the Introduction to BIM Implementation and Management aims to support those starting their BIM journey to understand what BIM is and what it means to the industry. The UK government strategy is addressed, focusing around considerations on processes and standards like BS1192:2007, PAS1192-2 and Cobie. The training provides a broad understanding on how to effectively address the BIM challenge from process, people and technology perspectives. Different purposes of BIM are presented, including its benefits and challenges, with examples of its adoption in design, construction and facilities management.
Upon completion of this module, participants will have the opportunity to proceed and complete the other four modules. You can study the complete training programme in a flexible way at your own time and pace and receive a Certificate in BIM Implementation and Management upon successful completion of training.

Who is this training for?
The training is designed for those who are starting their BIM journey and would like to have an overview of the BIM concept including implementation strategies, and BIM’s adoption in design and construction. It is also suitable for future project managers or client representatives on BIM-enabled projects who are seeking to develop their BIM Management fundamental knowledge and skills.
Participants to the BIM Implementation and Management course should have the following background:
- Any undergraduate degree or a relevant degree-equivalent professional qualification
- Working within the AEC industry and client organisation representatives responsible for the procurement of buildings or infrastructure projects.

On completion of this one day module the candidates will be able to:
- Understand the concept of BIM from a multidisciplinary perspective
- Understand the business case for BIM, its benefits and challenges
- Achieve an awareness of BIM execution plans and maturity models
- Have a broad understanding of the UK Government BIM strategy and some key documents in support of that.

The training is a one day face to face session presented by experts from the School of the Built Environment at the University of Salford, informing the National BIM Agenda in the UK. Learning will be highly interactive and supported. Apart from the lectures, there will be group exercises and examples from real-life BIM scenarios.

Certificate in BIM Implementation and Management
This distance learning option provides construction professionals with the fundamental knowledge and understanding of the principles, terminologies, tools and techniques of BIM.
The course includes discussions on issues about technology, process and people in the successful adoption of BIM on construction projects. It will help prepare candidates to assemble BIM-enabled design and construction teams as well as assisting the client in their needs for the successful implementation of BIM.
The course is designed with the UK Government Level 2 BIM requirements in mind but also provides the philosophical context of BIM, so that as the technology and requirements continue to evolve the lessons derived from this course will still apply. The training consists of five modules:
- Introduction to BIM
- Collaboration and Integration
- Process
- Overview of BIM-enabled technology
- Commercial and Contracts issues
Upon completion of the modules, participants will have the opportunity to take an online multiple choice assessment.
