Photos | Simpson’s refurbishment of Hull Maritime Museum

Heritage contractor Simpson (York) has revealed the original Victorian architecture of Hull Maritime Museum, as part of structural works involved in its £12m refurbishment.

Work on the 20-month project is expected to complete in late 2023 before the museum reopens in early 2025.

Simpson is working to build a new main atrium with a glass roof, a new lift to all the floors. A new staircase will give visitors access to one of the domes, offering views of the city.

The three domes at the museum have been stripped back to timber for repairs, before the lead covering them was resmelted and reinstalled.

Work also involves carving and installing 80 pieces of Ancaster limestone.

The refurbishment of the museum is part of Hull Maritime, a £30m project to restore two ships at the museum. Hull City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund have provided funding for the project.
