Across the globe, 2050 net-zero emission targets are putting pressure on industries and governments to minimise their carbon footprints. The road construction sector is no different and is actively looking for solutions and innovations that will help it reach its goals, says Andy Clifton.

Transport needs to become sustainable to meet 2050 carbon goals, and having the right infrastructure in place is a necessity to support it. For highways agencies, the challenge lies in delivering projects fit for next-generation, electric and autonomous vehicles while simultaneously minimising their environmental impact.

Machine control and digital construction are clear solutions to overcoming these challenges, by streamlining construction processes and providing superior accuracy and efficiency on site. The technology is already available to road constructors, but if the sector is to successfully meet sustainability goals, greater pickup will be necessary.
