The course I lead at UWE is designed to offer you the chance to be at the forefront of BIM practice, using a combination of theory and real-life practical experience that will enable you to become a valued professional at the centre of the collaborative project teams of the future.
It is centred on innovative, sustainable and collaborative practice with a strong emphasis on inter-professional and multi-disciplinary working, a particular strength of our department of architecture and the built environment, that underpins the taught programme and is also brought to life through work placements with key partners in industry, with the potential for ongoing employment.
We have found that the placement is of benefit to both our students and their host organisations. In the words of one company “BIM knowledge grew through association with student ‘contamination by association’.”
Testing of acquired knowledge is through “real life” BIM projects, focused across the full range of the built environment lifecycle; from design to construction and on to operation, maintenance, re-use and disposal.
The programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and is highly relevant to all members of the design, construction and facilities management professions who recognise the growing expectation of BIM expertise across industry, academia, training and consultancy.

Our BIM MSc programme has been developed for students and practitioners from architecture, engineering or construction professions seeking to develop skills in the theory and practice of BIM in design and construction.
The teaching is primarily research led supplemented by visiting lectures, seminars and projects from leading professionals and researchers in the field and aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the BIM technologies and concepts and their impact in the industry. Our course was one of the first masters established in BIM and was founded on 20 years of pioneering research, teaching and industry consultancy in the field. It is provided by the internationally recognised School of Built Environment at the University of Salford, which is ranked in the top 40 worldwide for architecture and built environment (QS Rankings).
I lead a large and experienced team to offer a programme which balances theory with practice through a combination of research-based and industry-informed teaching.
Our course aims to develop skilled professionals for the global construction industry by addressing the emerging needs for new skills for clients and built environment professionals to deliver better whole life financial, sustainable and societal value to the built environment and across a variety of sectors.

University of South Wales
MSc BIM and sustainability

Our MSc provides a hands-on approach to BIM. Throughout their studies, students will not only learn about the processes involved within BIM but also have extensive software training to help further their understanding of how these processes work.
At the start of the course students are provided with a brief to design an entire new building; previous projects have included a hospice and a lido, both of which were live projects.
More recently, a brief to design a new building on the University campus was provided.
Once given the brief, students use an industry-standard 3D package to generate a model, which is then used throughout the course to experience 3D through to 7D and by the end of the course students have a complete model filled with information.
