01 Things are changing
The Considerate Constructors Scheme is launching a new Code of Considerate Practice in January 2013, as well as new checklists, a new scoring system and new reports. As standards within the industry have improved over the years, the scheme has updated its checklists to reflect this and to “raise the bar”, supporting its ethos of encouraging a culture of continuous improvement.
02 Five-point code
The existing format of an eight-point Code of Considerate Practice will in future be split into five sections — appearance, community, environment, safety and workforce.

03 50 questions
The checklists will be reduced from more than 100 individual questions to 50 across the new five sections. There will still be a small number of bold questions which reflect the scheme’s core expectations of all sites and companies, and will allow monitors to quickly ascertain basic compliance with the scheme’s code. Each section will also include a series of open questions to encourage discussion between the monitor and the site manager about performance beyond compliance, as well as prompts to guide registered sites and companies on the scheme’s expectations.
04 What’s next?
Each of the five sections will be scored out of 10 points giving a total achievable score of 50, with a five point score in any one section indicating compliance. Every score from 1 to 10 will be accompanied by a clear and concise score descriptor so that sites and companies understand why a particular score has been given. References to “exceptional and unique” activities will be replaced with a maximum score in any section being achieved by not only addressing all questions within that section to a very high level, but also demonstrating innovative behaviour.
05 Measure success
Looking ahead to the remainder of 2012, there will be an internal process review, including training all of the scheme’s monitors. Live testing will then be conducted alongside “normal” site visits to provide data for a comparative score mapping exercise. There will be online webinars and new seminars and workshops delivered with content based on the new system. The final code and checklist will be published in October with a conversion table and guidance documentation, as all visits made after 1 January 2013 will be under the new system, including second visits.
