BIM was worth $6.9bn worldwide last year, according to a report from Brand Essence Research. Furthermore, the sector is forecast to grow by 15.3% a year until 2028, raising the sector’s value to $18.7bn. Growing digitisation in construction, increase in IT investments, and growing government acceptance of BIM will all contribute to “a huge need for BIM”.

HyperTunnel appoints new MD
The tunnelling and underground construction start-up has appointed Richard Matthews as its chief executive. HyperTunnel is developing new methods of tunnelling that enable tunnels to be built faster, with less risk, and in a more economical and environmentally friendly way through the application of digital twins, robotics, 3D printing and digital underground surveying, supported by AI and VR.
Flood victim builds a digital twin of the Earth

This inspired him to build a digital twin of the Earth “to understand how the initial impacts from a disaster might ripple out to cause a cascade of the subsequent effects that will exacerbate and prolong recovery”.
Record-breaking year for safe digging in the UK
Free-to-use online safe digging resource LSBUD was used for 3.4 million searches for underground pipes and cables in 2021, an increase of 13% on 2020. LSBUD now has more than 100 members, including two out of three of the UK’s utility operators, 90% of gas distribution networks, 92% of electricity distribution networks and 99% of fuel/oil pipeline operators.
