University of Birmingham researchers have used a quantum gravity gradiometer to detect a tunnel buried outdoors in real-world conditions 1m below the ground. The sensor works by detecting variations in microgravity using the principles of quantum physics. The breakthrough opens a commercial path to significantly improved underground mapping, according to the university.

Biosite Systems, the biometric access control specialist, has promoted Mike Rimmington from chief financial officer to MD. Biosite recently expanded its production capabilities with a second facility in Wellesbourne, Warwickshire, added to the existing facility in Solihull.
