Projects from six different countries have been named as winners in the Tekla Global BIM Awards 2014, which celebrate projects that use Tekla BIM software, with Finland taking top honours with two projects.
Six of the projects were selected by a jury from a longlist of regional BIM champions, while the seventh won a public online vote.
The jurors selected the partially retractable roof of the Singapore Sports Hub by Arup as the winner of the steel category. Its span of 310 meters makes it the largest free-spanning dome structure in the world. The award citation says that the collaborative design and structural engineering team used 3D modeling to create a highly buildable roof that is extremely efficient, lightweight and sophisticated.

The headquarters of Finnish financial services business OP-Pohjola (pictured below) won theTotal BIM category. It’s described as a multimaterial building with a complex, sloped precast concrete and glass facade.
A collaborative group of companies led by Swedish construction consultancy Sweco modeled the building, while several team members used models for clash checking, visualizations, quantity take off and scheduling plus coordination with BIM.
The in situ concrete award to River Vantaanjoki bridge in Finland, pictured below by Siltanylund Oy and Destia Oy. The project included design and construction of a new road, bridge structures crossing the river Vantaanjoki, pile slabs, and an underpass. The project team also modeled the roads and earthworks and utilised BIM in checking and approval process and on site.
The winning project in the precast category was the Mons railway station garage in Belgium (below), described as an unexpectedly beautiful structure by Hurks delphi engineering. Architect Santiago Calatrava designed the complex frame and wall elements that precast specialist Hurks cast by taking the fabrication information directly from Tekla software.
The best Engineering project was the multifunctional Torun Concert Hall in Poland, and a bridge in Vietnam won the public vote.
The jury of international BIM experts was: Dr. Arto Kiviniemi, Professor of Digital Architectural Design, University of Liverpool; Winn Gomez, BIM Manager of Oger International, Abu Dhabi; Dr. Burkhard Talebitari-Tewes, Specialist Journalist, Publishing House Wiley / Wilhelm Ernst & Sohn, Berlin, and Doug Brent, Vice President, Technology Innovation at Trimble, USA. Tekla was represented by the Executive Vice President and General Manager of Trimble Buildings Structures Division Risto Räty.
